Attention Technology Reporters:
Ottawa, Canada / Feb 21, 2002 - Internic.ca is among the world's first registrars accepting bookings for the new dot-US registry. Dot-US is the official country code for the USA and, under a new registry system officially sponsored by the US Department of Commerce, will become much more widely available in the next few weeks. Canadians who are permanent residents in the United States, Canadian entities that have incorporated organizations in the United States or, more generally, have a bona fide presence in the United States are now eligible to book dot-US domain names. The new dot-us domain name will establish a unique connection with America. There are two rounds of registration that will occur in the dot-us domain. The first round will start March 4th and will enable trademark holders to secure their dot-us domain. The second round will begin April 24th and will be open to everyone else. Internic.ca, part of a family of companies ranked among the Internet's fastest growing domain name registrars, is accepting bookings for dot-US names at: www.Internic.ca. The company's international affiliate has joined the first domain registrars named as channel partners in the new dot-US registry. "Based on the demand we have seen in the past few weeks, it is our belief that dot-US is going to be one of the largest extensions - possibly THE largest - on the Internet," said Rob Hall, President and CEO of Internic.ca. "Like dot-ca, dot-US is a great way for businesses, organizations and individuals to support their country, show their flag or demonstrate a significant connection to the United States of America." "As each new domain space opens up (such as dot-biz, dot-name, dot-info, dot-ca, and now dot-US), it attracts a long line of people wishing to be among the first to book the best names in the new space," said Hall. "The newer domains like dot-US give people a lot more choice than, say, the dot-com space, where over 22 million of the best domain names have already been registered. People can establish a new dot-US identity on the Internet using a short, memorable domain names for individuals and organizations from johnsmith.us and publicservice.us to mycompany.us. " "With over 100 million Americans using the Internet, demand for dot-US will be especially intense. We are delighted that Internic.ca and our sister company are among the first companies in the world offering this new identity," concluded Hall. Internic.ca and its affiliated companies have long been at the forefront of Internet development, offering industry-leading full customer service and a full suite of domain registration services. www.Internic.ca was Canada's first dot-ca accredited registrar and is now Canada's leading dot-ca registrar. Its ICANN-accredited sister company is ranked by the authoritative State of the Domain report as one of the world's fastest-growing registrars, is among the world's Top 50 registrars, was recently accredited as the world's first dot-name registrar, is provisionally accredited by the Australian Domain Authority (auDA) in the first wave of new dot-au registrars, and was among the first to start accepting dot-US domain name bookings in the upcoming deregulation of America's Internet Address. Based in Ottawa, the companies serve customers around the globe from offices in North America and the Caribbean, and are the world's only registrar group simultaneously accredited by ICANN, CIRA, auDA and the Global Name Registry. - 30 -
